Hello gardening friends! Yes, this is still the newsletter component to The Garden Path Podcast but it is being reformatted into its own name called In the Weeds. A little nicer than a general podcast newsletter name. I had been writing the newsletter on Mailchimp for about the last five years but last fall opted to set up a Substack and copy and paste newsletters here and upload episodes as well in an effort to catch a different audience. Well, I’m tired of doing both, and I have been really enjoying the Substack platform for my On Texas Nature newsletter and decided to go ahead and reformat it completely over here!
A few housekeeping notes:
The podcast is going on hiatus for a long summer break after one final interview episode that I will air later this week. I’m in major need of a break and some brainstorming on how to keep the podcast going without constantly doing interviews. It takes a lot out of me and while I do enjoy interviews, I’ve come to groan at the background research and editing needed for them. Stick tight while I come up with a better way to make podcasting work for me and listeners.
I will be writing here more frequently. When the newsletter was primarily at Mailchimp I kept writing minimal, mostly short garden updates, with some links to interesting nature and gardening reads, and links to podcast episodes. I’ll likely do that sometimes but I want to use this space to write more in-depth essays and brainstorm on garden and nature topics here in a manner I don’t typically do elsewhere. Some may end up as podcast episodes in the future. I’m excited to see where this all goes!
I hope those who had subscribed through Substack originally and the those who were in my Mailchimp email list will continue to stay on and read what I share here. If you feel like unsubscribing, go for it, no hard feelings! The best thing about Substack is you can read in the app or on the desktop as well and turn off emails if you need to (enable Smart notifications in your Notifications section if you download the app). And from what I’ve read you can also add Substack newsletters to an RSS reader so you can read there! I really like the options you can get and I find myself opening up Substack to read longform essays instead of scrolling Instagram these days. Substack also allows for commenting, likes, sharing, and saving a lot easier than a Mailchimp email did. It also allows for paywalled posts, though I do not have that activated now and am not sure I will ever activate that. We’ll see how this newsletter grows! My writing and podcasts will still be free for all at this point in time.
Thanks for sticking with me and I hope your gardening adventures in May are starting off well!
